Chairperson's report for NZCS
1st AGM 6th May 2009:

In January 2008 NZCS was formed and our first official meeting held in this same room where 12 people gathered. So in the last 16 months what have we been able to achieve?

Well we went from the original 15 founding members to 41 Full members, 5 Associate and 8 Corporate members mostly just from word of mouth... Full report

Presidents Report 2009:

When we work it is rare to interact with other Cinematographers, there is usually only one of us on set, and if there is talk of other Cinematographer’s techniques we learn of it through our Focus Pullers or Lighting Gaffers. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be on another set and to see how others work, how they juggle the politics of personalities, and how they get that particular look...

† Allen Guilford:

It was good to see so many people making the trip out to Tuakau on the 14th of this month to farewell our colleague and friend who passed away - Allen Guilford. I'm sure he would have been amused at the sight of so many filmo's squashed into the little funeral house and afterwards at his home in Pukekohe.

Many people present commented that it was great to have seen him in Wellington last December to be present at the Vittorio evening. This month both ONFILM and NZ TECHO will run tributes to Allen and his contributions to the NZ Screen production industry.

Toybox evening:

March 25th NZCS members attended an informative evening at Toybox's post production house where we were taken through all aspects of the facilities by James Hudson (Senior Producer). Associate NZCS member Clare Burlinson (freelance Colourist) was on

hand to demonstrate the Quantel Pablo suite and share her experience with those who attended. As well as being an informative evening it was good to catch up with new members who came along. Many thanks to Nanette, James, Clare and all the staff at Toybox who made us feel welcome to hang around for sometime after the official show and tell.

Panavision Phantom Evening at PLS.

On the 12th Feb. Panavision hosted an evening at PLS in cook street which looked at the Phantom camera's tricks and traps for High speed HD capture. This was well attended by members and threw up quite a few questions and some answers especially with regard to Tungsten flicker at extreme high speed's.

Many thanks to John Virtue and Paul Lake of Panavision for making that evening such a success and also many thanks to Chris McKenzie and his team at Professional Lighting Services for supplying the venue, lights, manpower and AC power for the evening. Also a special thanks to Chris for sharing with members his knowledge on all things connected with Film lighting.

Digipost

Digipostheld a well attended evening for members on the 3rd of July where we got a chance to see new workflow's and meet with some of the Digipost team as well as tour of the facility which was appreciated by many present.

Many thanks to Garry Little of Digipost for hosting this evening and laying on refreshments for those attending. As always these events also provide a chance for new members to meet with the rest of us and put faces to the names.

Dean Semler - Apocalypto:

On Queens Birthday Monday we had a marathon screening of Apocalypto followed by Q&A with Dean Semler ASC,ACS. After the relentless pace of the movie, most present were grateful for the refreshments laid on by Panavision before going into a very interesting Question and Answer session. We were extremely lucky to have Dean attend this as he was only in this part of the world to attend the ACS 50th events and awards. It was good to hear that Dean was very happy with the quality of HD projection at the Albany Skycity Cinema. We hope to be able to use this facility again in the future.
Also in attendance was John Galt of Panavision who is credited with the development of the Genesis camera. Many thanks to Panavision for making this happen.

30 05 2008 Sydney

Here a couple of photos from Kodak's friday night dinner in Sydney. In these shots Daryn Okada ASC tries to impress me with his wine collection and pleads for nzcs membership. Although cornered, I remain professionally unimpressed pending a full wine tasting evening.

Cheers Kevin

NZCS Special General Meeting

The first official meeting of NZCS as an Incorporated Society was held on the 30th of January at the Drake Tavern in Auckland. In attendance were many of the original 15 members who signed up to form the society. It did not take long for a robust discussion to start up on key topics. The committee was nominated and voted in including Leon Nareby as President with unanimous support. A note of thanks to Simon Raby for being the DOP with the foresight to bring a camera to record this moment on the right.
